Organic Chemistry
CHM 342 Organic Chemistry I
The research focus in my research group is divided between coordination chemistry and crystal engineering – in both areas organic synthesis is central. In the first area our initial goal is to synthesize new nitrogen-based ligands that selectively complex transition metal cations like silver(I) and mercury(II). Our final goal is to prepare compounds that have potential applications in metal extraction and in metal detection/analysis. In the field of crystal engineering we are designing and synthesizing the components needed to form hydrogen bonded capsules. Our goal is to predictably synthesize nanocapsules with well-defined internal volumes by the self-assembly of small components. We ultimately want to study the selective encapsulation of "interesting" molecules.
