Research Interests

Interdisciplinary research interests focus on the analysis of complex organic mixtures from biological sources, environmental samples and wastes. Recent projects include the analysis of: Omani frankincense, psychrophilic bacteria from Antarctica, and simulated nuclear wastes. Research goals extend beyond characterization: searching for chemotaxonomic probes for classifying new strains of bacteria, developing chemoarcheological probes for mapping ancient trade routes, and elucidating the mechanisms of organic degradation of complexing and chelating agents in mixed nuclear wastes. Research is also underway to develop new bioanalytical experiments for undergraduate biochemistry lab courses. Recent projects include the isolation and characterization of phytosterols from spinach and hallucinogens from nutmeg and other foodstuffs. The research typically entails developing analytical procedures to characterize the complex organic mixtures via chromatographic isolation and chemical derivatization, followed by GC, GC/MS and HPLC analysis.
